Should cultural festivals and retreats enforce 'digital detox' zones by blocking cellular signals?

Inspired by discussions around the 'Playa Phone' and temporary networks during Burning Man in early September 2026, the tension between hyper-connectivity and the desire for 'presence' is reaching a boiling point. Proponents argue that blocking cellular signals at festivals, concerts, and retreats is necessary to break screen addiction, foster genuine human connection, and protect privacy from non-stop recording. Opponents contend that constant connectivity is a vital safety, emergency coordination, and accessibility tool that should never be forcibly stripped away. This debate questions where we draw the line between spiritual presence and modern safety.

Honestly, yes. I'm so tired of seeing a sea of glowing screens instead of people actually dancing. Blocking signals is the only way to get everyone to look up and connect.

This is a safety nightmare. Imagine getting lost or injured at a massive festival and not being able to call for help. Forced detoxing is just irresponsible.
